Understanding Conjunctions in Astrology
Although some astrologers argue that a conjunction is not technically an aspect, nearly everyone agrees that it is one of the most significant relationships between planets in a natal chart. A conjunction occurs when two or more planets occupy the same area of the zodiac, causing their energies to blend into a unified force. A true conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the same sign. A planet located within approximately 5 degrees of the Sun is considered “combust”, meaning the Sun’s powerful energy may overshadow or weaken the planet’s expression. However, when a planet is extremely close to the Sun—within about 17 minutes of arc—it forms a Cazimi conjunction. In this rare case, the planet is strengthened and gains exceptional power through its union with the Sun. When several planets gather in conjunction, the result is known as a Stellium. Stelliums create some of the most complex chart patterns because multiple planetary energies must operate together. The individual planets become deeply interconnected, influencing one another in powerful ways.
Power
Conjunctions often represent concentrated talents and areas of significant personal power. Studying conjunctions in a natal chart can reveal unique gifts, natural abilities, and important life themes. To fully understand their influence, it is necessary to consider the planets “involved” along with their signs and house placements. For example, conjunctions in the tenth house frequently indicate strengths related to career, public recognition, and reputation. Such individuals may devote considerable energy to professional achievement and building a respected public image. Astrologically, the conjunction symbol is represented by a circle connected by a line, illustrating the merging of planetary energies. Each planet contributes its strengths, creating a combined force that can be more powerful than either planet acting alone. Conjunctions draw attention to specific areas of life. For example, a conjunction in the fourth house often places greater emphasis on family matters, roots, and domestic life.
Smoothness
Conjunctions frequently indicate areas where energy flows naturally and with little resistance. They can highlight talents that seem to emerge effortlessly. Mercury conjunct the Moon, for example, can make emotional expression feel natural and instinctive. People with this placement often communicate their feelings openly and possess a strong connection between thought and emotion. The significance of a conjunction’s orb varies depending on the planets involved. Inner planets typically require a tighter orb, while outer planets can still form meaningful conjunctions over greater distances. Among the most favourable conjunctions are those involving Venus, which tends to bring harmony, beauty, affection, and cooperation. Jupiter can also enhance conjunctions by adding growth and opportunity, though it may sometimes exaggerate the qualities of the planets involved.

One of the defining characteristics of conjunctions is their intensity. They magnify whatever energies they unite. When beneficial planets join together, fortunate circumstances and positive qualities may be amplified. When challenging planets combine, the result can be internal conflict, difficulties, or self-defeating patterns. A conjunction between a benefic and a malefic planet often creates a mixture of supportive and challenging influences. Venus conjunct Mars, for example, can generate powerful passion and attraction. Jupiter conjunct Mars increases ambition, confidence, and drive, but may also lead to excessive determination or stubbornness.
